Developmental Editing

Stick figure digging in dirt
Choose this service if you’ve cultivated your story as much as you can on your own and are ready for some professional guidance. It’s best if you’ve revised a few drafts before submitting it for a developmental edit.

With this service, I give feedback on plot, character, worldbuilding, pacing, consistency, and any other areas that need attention. I’m especially skilled at spotting plot holes, implausibilities, and issues with point of view or spatial continuity. Essentially, I poke holes in the story and help you fill them now so that no one can poke holes in it later. My feedback is always encouraging and solution oriented.

You get two deliverables with a developmental edit:
  • The original manuscript marked with my marginal comments of real-time reactions, questions, or suggestions
  • An editorial letter detailing the manuscript’s strengths and suggested areas for improvement, with specific recommendations and resources for revision

For a lighter version of a developmental edit, take a look at my manuscript evaluation service.

Manuscript Evaluation

Choose this service if your story is ready for some general, big-picture advice from a professional editor. You may want a manuscript evaluation instead of or in addition to a developmental edit.

My feedback focuses on plot, character, worldbuilding, pacing, consistency, and any other areas that need attention. You’ll get an editorial letter detailing the manuscript’s strengths and suggested areas for improvement, with specific recommendations and resources for revision.

This service does not include marginal comments on the manuscript itself, although that is included in a developmental edit.

Line Editing

Choose this service if your plot, worldbuilding, and character arcs are airtight, but you know the writing needs improvement at the sentence level.

Line editing doesn’t focus on solving big-picture issues or correcting grammatical and punctuation errors. Instead, this service concentrates on word choice and sentence structure, truly bringing your story to life with active verbs, vivid descriptions, and consistent style choices.

With a line edit, I’ll refine wording and rewrite sentences as needed, but rest assured that your unique voice will remain intact. My goal is to enhance your writing without taking away what makes it yours.

Copyediting

Choose this service if all the big story elements of your manuscript are nailed down, the prose is beautiful, and you're ready to get into the nitty-gritty of the language.

Copyediting is the most standard form of editing. I focus on correcting mechanical errors in punctuation, spelling, grammar, and formatting, but I also look at issues in style, clarity, word choice, sentence structure, and coherence. This doesn't include fact-checking, comprehensive rewrites, or restructuring.

I also provide you with a personalized style sheet for your story. This lists things like spelling and capitalization of character and place names, as well as unique style decisions.

Formatting

Choose this service if you want a clean, navigable document you'll be proud to send to book designers or agents. It's best if this service is done before or in conjunction with my proofreading service.

For this service, I use Word's Styles feature to ensure uniformity and give you an organized document formatted to your exact specifications. While formatting is different than interior design, it will prepare your manuscript for a professional book designer. And if you're going the traditional publishing route, a formatted manuscript is sure to impress agents.
I'll ensure consistency of these elements:
  • Headings
  • Font type and size
  • Paragraph and line spacing
  • Page and section breaks
  • Indentation and alignment
  • Margins
  • Headers and footers
  • Lists, tables, and graphics
  • References
I'll insert these layout and reference elements:
  • Page numbers
  • Table of contents
  • Title page and other front matter as needed
  • Appendixes and other back matter as needed

Proofreading

Two signs pointing in opposite directions, one reading
Choose this service if your manuscript is nearly ready for publication but needs a final set of professional eyes to rid it of any lingering errors.

Proofreading happens after all other types of editing have been done and is the last stage before a piece is published. This service focuses on correcting mechanical errors in punctuation, spelling, grammar, and formatting. It does not include fact-checking or rewriting and leaves word choice and sentence structure alone (unless they cause grammatical issues).

I only correct what is technically wrong according to the general rules of English and your preferred style guide. Proofreading typically occurs in PDF format after interior design and typesetting have been completed, although I proofread plenty of Word documents as well.

A Note on Rates

Each project is unique, and so is the amount of attention it needs to shine. Because of this, I do not list my rates publicly. Instead, my rates vary based on the length, technicality, and turnaround time of each individual project. Reach out to me for a quote that meets your specific needs.

For line editing, copyediting, and proofreading, I'll need a sample of the project in order to give you an accurate estimate. The best part? This sample of up to 1,000 words is done for FREE! Your work will remain confidential, and the free sample does not obligate you to continue with my services. To get a free sample line edit, copyedit, or proofread, please fill out this form. (Please note that free samples are limited to manuscripts with a minimum of 30,000 words.)
